What are the criteria for a name change during Passport Renewal?
It is a question which troubles many of the applicants while changing their names or that of parents in their passports at the time of renewing it. First, we need to find different scenarios in changing these names.
Scenario 1: Change of Surname for a woman after their marriage. Ministry of External Affairs allows any woman after marriage to change the surname from maiden to that of their spouse’s surname with a declaration even if they do not have a marriage certificate. It is to be clearly noted that, only the surname can be changed with this rule and not the middle name or the first name.
There are cases where applicants keep their old surname as a middle name and add the new surname as the last name while applying it. This rule is in no way applicable to such scenarios. And in case if you produce your marriage certificate, please note that you should have the new surname in the marriage certificate and not that of the maiden name.
